A marine survey project targeting Okinotorishima has been selected as a Tokyo Metropolitan Government research and investigation project.
Okinotorishima is located about 100km south of central Tokyo.1,700kmIt is the southernmost island in Japan, belonging to Ogasawara Village, Tokyo. The island is about42The exclusive economic zone (EEZ) of 10,000 square kilometers (EEZ : Exclusive Economic Zone) and plays an extremely important role in terms of preserving Japan's land. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government is conducting research and studies aimed at maintaining, conserving, and utilizing Okinotorishima and the surrounding sea area.
Reiwa7This year, a public call was made for research proposals that would be "based on basic research, applied research, demonstration experiments, field surveys, etc., involving on-site activities, leading to the maintenance, conservation, and utilization of Okinotorishima and its surrounding sea areas." Our university, led by faculty members from the Department of Marine Resources and Energy, has formulated a research plan, "Uncovering the past and present of Okinotorishima through marine surveys," utilizing the practical voyage of the training ship "Shintaka-Maru," and this time it has been selected for the project.
Reiwa7From the fiscal year9Over the course of fiscal year, geoscientific surveys and surveys of fishery resources will be conducted around Okinotorishima to shed light on the island's formation process, current seabed environment, and marine life habitat, with the aim of contributing to its future conservation and utilization.
Location of Okinotorishima
It takes about four days by boat one way.
Our university's training ship, Shinyo-Maru
